Post-Bound Scrapbooks

One of the things I found frustrating as a traditional scrap-booker was in the area of post-bound albums.  I would be making a book for my kids and I would search for a book to hold my pages and I was disappointed by my choices.  I either had to pick one with a solid color or one with a generic pattern that anyone could buy and I wanted something unique that showcased the theme of my book.  For years I settled for those plain, unexciting books but now I no longer have to!  I can now create my own unique, one-of-a-kind book cover.  How ingenious is that?
In my digital art studio I can now create the cover of my dreams for my 12 x 12 post-bound cover.  It comes with ten 12x12 clear sleeves (I can buy more at Wal-mart, Target) and extenders to make the book as large as I want.  I can also slide my digital and traditional scrap-pages into my personalized book.
Below is the book I made for a family trip we took to Washington D.C and New York City a few years ago.

Here are the photos of our three baskets we auctioned off.
This basket contained points for an 8x8 Storybook, photo frame, Free account, and 1-hour Free Design appointment.

This basket included a Keepsake Bracelet (holds 6 photos), photo frame, Free account and 1-hour Free Design appointment.

Traditional vs. Digital

In the world of scrapbooking there are two different camps; the traditional and the digital.  The traditional scrapper likes to cut, paste and use the specialized tools and the digital scrapper prefers to use technology to make the process quicker and easier.  No matter where your preference lies there is one thing both sides have in common; the desire to remember, document and tell their stories.
Deep down we all want our lives to have meaning; we want our families and friend to remember us when we are gone.  How we choose to document our lives and the lives of our families becomes a personal preference.  In the end it doesn’t matter how we preserve and tell our stories; it’s just important that we do.
For the month of April I want to focus on what I call Hybrid Scrapbooking.  Hybrid Scrapbooking is where we do some traditional, some digital and a combination of both.  There will be tips, techniques, samples, challenges and most of all fun and creativity.

Project of the Month: Magnet Magic

Making magnets has never been so easy. Follow these directions to create your own one of a kind magnets.

First, I created (Thank you Shannon for sharing your template with me!) these magnets on a 12x12 scrapbook page in my design studio.  You can use template # 36902 in the gallery and change the squares to fit your style. I made mine with inspirational quotes and then ordered them.  Once they arrived I cut out the 2x2 inch squares for a total of 36.

I then went to the home improvement store and looked through their tile section.  I purchased this sheet of 36 2x2 inch tiles.  Each tile is held together by a heavy duty glue and you can break each one apart.  You can see in the upper left one is already been broken off.  It's great because this tile sheet has 36 tiles and it works perfectly for our sheet above that also has 36 squares.
Next, I stopped at my local craft store and purchased a can of spray adhesive, spray sealer and package of circle magnets.

Then I was ready to assemble my magnets.
I took my paper square and sprayed adhesive on the back and put on top of the tile.

I let it dry overnight to insure that it was completely dry.  Read the direction on your adhesive to see their recommendations.  Once it was dry I sprayed the sealer over the paper and tile.  I let that dry for a few hours.

Lastly, I turned the tile over and glued magnet on with hot glue.

Here is the final project hanging on my fridge with my other magnets.

A Story of Blessings

Today I had an appointment with a mother and daughter for a Demo at Panera Bread.  I sat at a table in the back away from the main dining area for more privacy and larger tables.  During our demo the table in front of me was vacant and an old man took the table and sat with his back to me.  As I was demoing he would occasionally look over his shoulder at us and of course my first thought was he must be interested.  I continued talking with the ladies and I saw him stand to leave and he was looking at me.  I looked up and smiled.
“You need to get an office” the old man said.
“Well, isn’t it great with today’s technology that we can make our office just about anywhere,” I said back.
“I didn’t come out to eat and pay for food to hear you blabber the whole time,” he said to me.
“I’m so sorry I was bothering you,” I responded.
“No you’re not!” he said in an unkind voice.
For a second I was not sure how to respond but I knew that I didn’t need to meet unkindness with unkindness.  “I’m so sorry you feel that way but I sure hope you have a wonderful day,” were the words I spoke to him.  He grumbled under his breath as he walked away.  One of the ladies I was meeting with said, “Well, we are thankful she is here and we like listening to her,” to the old man’s retreating back.
I touched her hand and thanked her for trying to defend me.  This was a woman I just met and she felt the need to protect me and I was touched.
We continued the demo and in the end I got 1 Club client (and mom wants to join after she gets back home).
But this is only the beginning….I was packing up when the gentleman sitting behind me saw my bag and mentioned that his wife just signed up with HM.  He was there with a female friend and we started talking about life and then they asked me for my card.  I gave them both one of my flyers and the man said, “Too bad my wife already signed up with someone else.”  I thanked him.  But then to my left I heard “I want one too.”
I turned and a lady had been listening and she wanted my card and contact information too.  I then spoke with her for a bit about the business.
Finally, I was packed up to leave and I felt compelled to go out the farthest door from my car.  As I exited the door I ran into a friend I haven’t seen for a while and she invited me to join her for lunch with her family and friends.  At lunch I didn’t bring up my business because this was a friend that wanted nothing to do with it so I chose to leave it alone.  During the conversation she brought up what I do to her family and friends and told me to pull out a book and show them.  And that is exactly what I did.
At the end of a few hours I had eight HM conversations and two new club members.  And I think it was because I refused to let the negativity affect me.  I wonder if I would have taken what the man said personally and let it get me down if I would have attracted these people.   I have always had to bring up the conversation but I had people asking me….they wanted to know more.
I feel so blessed for being put in this situation.  These are the situations that test us and makes up better human beings.
On the drive home I was happy about my day but a part of me felt sad for the old man.  I wondered why he was so negative.  Was he sad because he was all alone? Did someone in his life just pass away?  Did he feel loved?  I would love to meet him again and have an opportunity to wonder about him and break down his wall of hurt.
